In 1968 Gallery replaced Compass, which had gone air in October 1964. It was initially weekly but expanded to twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In a largely studio based format it continued to provide regular in depth coverage of political topics from both a New Zealand and overseas perspective. It ended in 1974 after Broadcasting was split by the government into Radio New Zealand, TV Service 1 and TV Service 2 in preparation for a second channel.
