This is the opening episode of this arts series which teamed “expert” Douglas Lloyd-Jenkins with “everyman” (and screenwriter) Nick Ward — and sent them on a road trip in search of artistic talent all around NZ. First stop is Northland which is “teeming with artists” as the pair encounter corrugated iron sculptor Jeff Thomson, potter Richard Parker, the iconic Hundertwasser toilets in Kawakawa, Manos Nathan who fuses traditional Maori design and ceramics, and Zealandia — Terry Stringer’s remarkable and “beautifully coiffeured” sculpture garden, studio and home.

The Big Art Trip hits the highways and byways of New Zealand, showcasing some of our most talented artists, as well as discovering some new ones. Presented by Douglas Lloyd Jenkins who, with a background in design, art and architecture takes viewers on a journey through the colourful world of painters, sculptors, musicians, fashion designers, film makers and potters. Demonstrating the richness of New Zealand's creative talent The Big Art Trip is a unique series that travels throughout the country celebrating our extraordinary art and profiling those who create it.
