Maori Music: Stories of Maori musicians and entertainers who have been largely unrecognised for their contributions. Tonight: From Horowhenua to Las Vegas, a profile of the Maori Hi Fives and their success in the US.
Ep. 3. Mary & The Māori Hi Five – Internationally successful, this quintessential Māori Showband was honored last year with a star on the Las Vegas strip. From Horowhenua to Las Vegas, with any number of cities in between, Mere Nimmo (Mary McMullan) was introduced to the Māori Hi Fives (Rob Hemi, Soloman Pohatu, Wes Epae, Kawana Pohe & Peter Wolland) in 1961. So began the incredibly successful rise of this group’s star that included supporting international acts such as Duke Ellington, Eartha Kitt, The Beatles and Louis Armstrong. Mary and Kawana are now citizens of the USA, having raised their families there, resulting in an intriguing mix of Americana and Maoritanga.
