Special programme on the referendum on Liquor licencing and extending the parliamentary term from three years to four years.

Compass went to air initially in October 1964. It was the first local programme to provide regular in depth coverage of political topics from both a New Zealand and overseas perspective.

  • 1The referendum proposes changing the liquor laws to allow public houses to serve liquor after 6pm with the new closing hour at 10pm, thereby putting an end to '6 o'clock closing', or 'the 6 o'clock swill'. Protesters say it will increase the amount of alcohol available and just extend the 'swill' and make matters worse; advocates say it will be civilising. There are also people espousing prohibition. An Australian report on the State of Victoria which changed to 10pm closing in 1966, and the almost complete lack of effect on public behaviour.
