Programme Description

• Craig Walsh-Wrightson presents a documentary on independent secondary schools in New Zealand. Dr. Austin Mitchell has attacked New Zealand private schools as "existing solely as a means of turning out little English ladies and gentlemen under licence from abroad". He was attacking private/independent schools. The discussion is on the function and the need for private schools in New Zealand as well as the prejudices around this kind of education. The high numbers of such schools means there is still a belief in them. The documentary features Jack Shallcrass, Education at Victoria University; Stan Newman, Christchurch Teacher's College; Alexia Page, Marsden Collegiate School for Girls; Peter Valder, Cathedral Grammar, Christchurch; David McPhail, actor; and Judy Fyfe, journalist.
