The government is to launch Rolleston, 10 miles from Christchurch, as its first new town or satellite city. This is to cope with population growth, stimulate regional development and stop the drift to the north and overcome the restrictions on growth in Christchurch. However the is opposition and other towns in the region think this will detract from their development.
