Karaweko wharenui is a dedication to the Kai Tahu tīpuna who survived being incarcerated by Te Rauparaha for over ten years to return home to his isolated Akaroa and lead his people. Ōnuku was also one of the first places in the south where the Treaty was signed and consequently where the NZ Govt apologised to Ngāi Tahu.
