  • 2One of the few remaining controls on New Zealand financial institutions is the 30 Day Rule, whereas trading banks can not pay interest on deposits for a term of less than thirty days. If this rule is abolished, and trading banks are permitted to pay interest on core money, they will be able to deal in an area traditionally monopolised by merchant banks. This will create greater competition between trading and merchant banks.
