A weekly Maori perspective on people, news, arts, and language from Television New Zealand (TVNZ).

  • 1This month witnesses the celebration of 25 years of television In New Zealand, How has television affected Maori people in the past 25 years? The first entertainers on television were the Howard Morrison Quartet and in some ways, the television image of Maori as entertainers only remains. The stereotypes perpetuated in pakeha programming also portray Maori as sportsmen, cultural performers and apparent troublemakers. However, it has been left to news and regional programmes to cover Maori cultural events such as Ratana celebrations. Contentious contemporary issues appear to have been studiously avoided by Pakeha programmers. A third channel is likely in the near future, but will commercial interests and Pakeha values continue to overshadow Maori concerns?
