1Parihaka, a small village lying to the west of Mount Taranaki (Egmont) has for more than 100 years, stood in testimony to the power of peace against the prejudice of colonial greed. The driving forces behind Parihaka, Te Whiti-o-Rongomai and Tohu Kākahi, were condemned by Government and settlers alike as being religious humbugs. However, they were prophets, whose methods of passive resistance preceded the efforts of Gandhi and Martin Luther King by more than half a century. On 30 June 1985, land developed by the Department of Maori Affairs was returned to the people. On the same day, the great-grandson of John Bryce, the man who led the charge upon Parihaka last century, came to make his peace with the iwi kainga (settlement).
