A weekly Maori perspective on people, news, arts, and language from Television New Zealand (TVNZ).

  • 1By the 1920s, the traditional sounds of Maori music had been virtually silenced, with the exception of the occasional chant or lament heard on the marae. Pakeha, with their new religion, brought new sounds to the people. However recently, ancient instruments have been revived and Maori have taken introduced instruments, like the guitar, and developed their own rhythms, harmonies and actions around them. Many Maori have experienced musical success, both in New Zealand and internationally. However, there is a clear overseas influence in the Maori music of today. Which path is Maori music going to take into the future?
