1Seventy-one years after the landing at Gallipoli, April 25th is still held sacred by many New Zealanders. However, for many others, it has become just another public holiday. How relevant is ANZAC Day in the 1980's? Over the years, questions have been raised about the validity of setting aside a day that saw the slaughter of thousands of young New Zealand men, who were fighting a war for a country thousands of miles away. Ironically, this day of reflection and remembrance became a day of conflict in the 1970s during the Vietnam War years. This year, ANZAC Day was relatively free of conflict, but while the country remains divided on the issue of defence, there will always remain questions about the reasons for ANZAC Day being commemorated.
