  • 1The Future of the Commonwealth Like many families, the Commonwealth is currently going through a sticky patch. Many newly-independent countries are at odds with the Mother Country over South Africa. In the past, Britain has tended to regard itself as head of the Commonwealth with an ability to always get her own way. Now, the Black African countries are attempting to force their opinions of a British Government in the same way that for decades, Britain forced her opinion on them. However, for all its faults, all its diversity, all its disagreement, the Commonwealth has remained strong. What does the Commonwealth offer? Does it help the member countries? Or is it an anachronism that should be mothballed? Discussion and viewer talkback with Commonwealth expert Stephen Chan.
