  • 1Immigration Until quite recently, almost anyone from Britain with either cash, employment or family in New Zealand was welcomed to settle in New Zealand. However, many Pacific Islanders, welcomed in New Zealand as a cheap source of labour, also wanted to settle here permanently. They came with large family units, unfamiliar lifestyles and different priorities. There were, inevitably, clashes with many New Zealanders fearing a "Brown Wave" of Polynesians that threatened the traditional New Zealand way of life. Many Islanders risked not going through the official channels, resulting in the ugliness of the dawn raids of the 1970s. Recently the Sunday Star revealed that Pacific Islanders constituted the biggest ethnic group prosecuted for illegal residence in New Zealand (overstaying), but that Britons and Americans were numerically here illegally in greater numbers. Discussion and viewer feedback with Immigration Minister Kerry Burke, about a new Bill before Parliament reorganising New Zealand's immigration policy and establishing New Zealand's immigration priorities.
