  • 1Shellfish Attitudes Under the Treaty of Waitangi Maori are guaranteed access to their traditional fishing grounds. Last month the High Court quashed the conviction of a Maori who took undersized paua because of his Treaty rights. At the same time, his Pakeha companion was punished. The threw the ambiguity of current fishing regulations into sharp relief and led to tension on the beaches north of Dargaville, where some are testing the ruling by raiding the technically closed toheroa beds. The ill-feeling that ensued between Maori and European over apparent inequality of the law has threatened the peace of the community and the future of the shellfish beds.
