  • 1Radar Trap Recent incidents have heightened concern about the safety of the airways. Air traffic controllers say New Zealand has an unacceptably high number of incidents and that number is growing. They are particularly concerned about New Zealand's radar system. A Government Commission of Inquiry concluded that more sophisticated radar was essential, but an updated radar system is still years away from being installed. In the meantime, how safe are New Zealand's airways?

  • 2A Mixed Blessing Pope John Paul II is due to arrive in New Zealand in two weeks. Around 450,000 New Zealanders are Catholic -15% of the population - and organisers are expecting at least that many to turn out to watch the Papal cavalcade. This is the first New Zealand visit by a reigning Pontiff, and while all Catholics welcome John Paul's visit, some see it as a mixed blessing. Catholics of both liberal and conservative tendencies want to raise serious theological issues with the Pop during his visit.
