1Coup Latest reports from Fiji say that Governor General Ratu Sir Penaia Ganilau has issued a proclamation declaring the office of Prime Minister and all his previous Cabinet appointees vacant. Ganilau has also declared that all executive authority in Fiji is vested in himself. Today he is expected to name the Council of Advisors, who will supervise Fiji's business until new elections can be called. The Great Council of Chiefs has overwhelmingly endorsed the actions of coup leader Lieutenant Colonel Sitiveni Rabuka. They have also suggested that Fiji should be a Republic, rather that accept the compromise solution of an interim Council and new elections. The 28 members of the deposed Government of Dr Timoci Bavadra have been released and are considering launching Supreme Court action to challenge the Governor General's declaration. Bavadra has the backing of the New Zealand Government in his negotiations with the Governor General over the running of Fiji.
