Television New Zealand's mid-evening news bulletin, which delves deeper into the significant events and issues of the day,

  • 1A huge security clampdown has followed yesterday's second military coup in Fiji. With the army now firmly back in control, there has been a round up of politicians, trade unionists and members of the judiciary. The New Zealand Navy survey ship HMNZS Monowai has been dispatched to Fiji in case it is needed to evacuate New Zealanders. Prime Minister David Lange has reacted with indignation, but has simultaneously closed an immigration loophole that would have allowed Fijian Indians (Indo-Fijians) to seek sanctuary in New Zealand.
