Under the Treaty of Waitangi, tribes were guaranteed full exclusive rights to their land, forests and fisheries. However, sometimes Maori find themselves competing for resources with companies like Fletcher Challenge and at other times, they feel a responsibility to act as guardians for the natural environment.
