  • 1Two men have been charged with the theft of Colin McCahon's million dollar Urewera Mural. The Police believe it is clearly a political action, but supporters of the men charged argue that is not the case. The men themselves are remaining silent about their motivations. This theft is the latest in what appears to be a growing list of outrages against treasures and taonga, both Maori and pakeha. Are we witnessing a growing and repugnant trend towards the destruction of cultural artifacts to make a point or is it all just vandalism for the sake of vandalism?
