  • 4In 1997, Ngai Tahu Runanga, as part of its Treaty settlement, was vested ownership of pounamu. Ownership was then to be passed to whanau who are the traditional guardians of pounamu. Since then there has been a moratorium on mining pounamu and whanau are still waiting for ownership. 90% of greenstone sales in NZ are made from imported material. Carvers are frustrated while Ngai Tahu is protective of its uniquely NZ resource.
