Due to the live nature of Te Karere, some segments will not be subtitled. 12 January 2012 Another day, another drama - salvage efforts continue and locals are on edge. What are the thoughts of the Te Ara Taura chair on rumours about the tribe's management? And what's ahead for Zac Guildford this year? Tena koutou katoa, and welcome to Te Karere. The salvage team have boarded the Rena in the hopes of stopping any more containers from falling off the ship and polluting the coast. They have yet to examine the ship's stern which sunk recently. We've just received these pictures. It's reported that oil will hit Maketu tonight and locals are preparing themselves and their shores for the onslaught. At the place where the Te Arawa canoe landed - an old man waits for another canoe's pollution. We are hurt and angry by it all. What's meant to happen is a 4km oil spill is to hit the shores of Maketu this evening. So things like this - called a boom - have been setup. Our shell fish beds are just in front of the Marae. Also near the Marae people were swimming and playing in the water - despite warnings that they shouldn't. It's a burden that we as the stewards of this area have to bear. Elaine is unsure whether they will have enough volunteers once the oil and debris hit Maketu shores. And that makes me sad too - how will we cope? The oil and debris are expected to hit Maketu, Little Waihi and Pukehina Beaches tonight. Ngahuia Wade, Te Karere The community of Taratahi are currently holding a ceremony to lift the restrictions on the area where 11 died in a hot-air balloon accident. The ceremony began just after noon. The wreckage has been taken to a secure sight for the night and will be moved to Wellington tomorrow. The 16 year-old charged over the brutal sexual assault of a 5 year old girl in Turangi last month has appeared in the Taupo youth court. Indicating he intends to plead guilty. The young girl was in her campervan when the attack occurred. The accused has name suppression and is remanded in custody at a youth justice facility. He will reappear in court next week. The Mayor of Porirua and local iwi agree that there should be a Maori seat on the council. However, this issue has been pushed aside for four years. Jasmyn Pearson has more. The debate on Maori seats aren't new for this member of Takapauwaahia Marae. We want entrenched Maori seats. Through the current democratic process his relation Liz Kelly, also from Ngati Toa was elected as Deputy Mayor. He says the problem here is that councils are just not getting it. You already have Ngati Toa representation on the council - is that not sufficient? That's fine but it's not the point, Maori representation needs to be entrenched. Porirua has a population of 15,000 people; it has 13 councillors and one mayor governing it. Mayor Nick Leggett say's it's too many. The local tribe say's they understand that, but when will councils be formally responsible for their part in honouring the Treaty of Waitangi. If we don't get in through the he current process The Mayor of Porirua supports the entrenchment of Maori seats . So how does he feel about Wellington becoming a Super city? It's a point of view the Mayor of the Wellington area shares alone and Maori seats on the Porirua council wont been addressed until 2016. Jasmyn Pearson, Te Karere. After the break, this family will be packing their belongs as they prepare to move from their home in Christchurch's Red-zone. Stay tuned for more. What is in store for Zac Guildford and the new Maori faces of the Crusaders team. This is Kaiapoi, an area still badly affected by the Christchurch quakes. Many families have fled and many are preparing to leave because they are in the red-zone. Here's Rapaera Tawhai's report. It may look safe. You can see the foundations of the house but you can't see the impact of the damage. Ngareta Nihoniho and her family has one week left in their home before they must leave. So this is what she'll be doing over the next few days. Te Karere was here the first time an earthquake struck, at the time the family didn't think it was safe to stay even though the inspector said it was. The house now sits in the Red-zone. The house now sits in the Red-zone. The Government are paying them out, so they're moving to another town half an hour away. She says, she will never buy a two storey house again. She's lucky she works from home, but her kids are wary of moving to another town. But she says she'd rather live in a safe environment. Rapaera Tawhai, Te Karere. Despite the trials of last year, Waikato-Tainui came out on top with their asset values climbing to an $800m net worth. But on New Year's day, Waikato-Tainui again found themselves thrust under the spotlight. King Tuheitia announced that the tribe's management needed to undergo some changes. Last week, a member of Te Ara Taura openly supported the king's call for change. Taitimu Maipi says everything needs to change from Te Ara Taura to Te Kauhanganui. Te Ara Taura chair Tuku Morgan will speak with us now. Happy New Year to you. The following will not be subtitled due to the live nature of the interview. Go to our website after 7pm to watch this interview with subtitles. Tukoroirangi Morgan, thank you for your time. People farewell Kateia Burrows of Rarotonga and Ngati Porou descent. The Maori Party's co-leader says he is saddened at the loss of such an inspirational woman. She will be buried tomorrow. The Crusaders have begun to train. A Maori All Black in the team came under fire last year. Now it's a new year and he can concentrate on recuperating. The Crusaders kicked off their Super 15 season training today with their Rugby World Cup heroes returning to the 2012 outfit. But All Black Zac Guildford, there's no where he'd rather be because he plans to stay focused. In mid-November this Ngati Kahungunu boy was caught misbehaving in Rarotonga. As a result, he went into rehabilitation for two months. Because of his actions he's been suspended from the first four games of the competition. He's just grateful he'll get the chance to support his team. He's given up drinking for the year and plans to focus on the task at hand. Te Hemara Rauhihi, Te Karere. Breaking news. A press release is being released relating to Willie Ripia's resignation from the Western Force. Willie has returned to New Zealand to be supported by his family in Rotorua as he works through serious issues relating to gambling. What skills appeal to the world's top dancing troupe? Auditions were held in Hamilton recently. Eyes of concentration from the worlds class dance tutor Paris Gobel.
