Coming up on Te Karere... The guardianship of a child has been granted by the Child, Youth and Family Services to a Maori iwi entity in Tauranga. This is the first time a Maori has been given into the guardianship of an official entity. Next week, district courts, family courts and youth courts will incorporate the Maori language... And we speak with Elias Shadrock, a daughter of Ngati Porou and member of the Magic team about their battle against the Vixens on Sunday. Due to the live nature of Te Karere, some segments will not be subtitled. Tena koutou katoa, and welcome to Te Karere. The Family Court has appointed Te Runanga o Ngai Te Rangi the legal guardian of a Maori child that was under CYFs care. It's the first time an iwi authority has been granted custody and follows a recent appeal from the Youth Court to iwi, to take over the care of children caring for foster kids. More than 2000 children are in CYFs care. Now the guardianship for one child More than 2000 children are in CYFs care. Now the guardianship for one child has been granted to Te Runanga o Ngai Te Rangi. The child is an 11-year-old boy (just like these Ngai Te Rangi children) who was removed from his family and placed in foster care. After applying to the Family Court for custody, Te Runanga o Ngai Te Rangi was appointed as his legal guardian as they were better equipped to serve his needs. Earlier in the week, Principal Youth Court Judge Andrew Becroft stated Tainui CYFs kids should be placed in Tainui homes. The Minister of Maori Affairs agrees. This is an example of how we can take our own Maori children out of CYFs care and put them in our own home. and put them in our own homes. Paul Stanley wants all Ngai Te Rangi children in state care, and the Govt resources keeping them there, returned to the iwi. Ngahuia Wade, Te Karere. The Waitangi Tribunal hearing concerning water rights has shaken the nation this week. Te Reo Irirangi o Te Upoko o Te Ika has been broadcasting the hearing from Waiwhetu Marae near Wellington. Shortly before the show, we spoke with the chair of the radio station Wena Tait. What was the benefit of broadcasting the hearing over the radio? We're unable to provide subtitles. Visit our website after 7pm to watch interview with subtitles. That was Wena Tait, chairperson of Te Reo Irirangi o Te Upoko o te Ika. From Monday, tobacco displays must be removed from shops with new government laws coming into play. Philip Morris knows its products kill New Zealanders but is pushing addicts to pressure the government to drop measures which would make it harder to smoke. They have created a website which allows smokers to voice their opinions. On Monday, District, Family and Youth Courts will start opening, adjourning and closing sittings in Maori and English. The new move has its supporters and critics. It's a morning tea for these in Waitakere. There's lots of praise for the language and the level it has reached. We all need to be on the same page; if Maori is an official language, then speak it. English is already spoken in courts so it's time that Maori is too. Maori lawyers also share the same thoughts. Maori language gained its official status in 1987. It's taken us a while to get to the point where Maori is used in official court proceedings. This is a great milestone because our ancestors have fought hard for our language to be heard around the country. The Maori Law Society fully supports the move but there are those out there who believe it's a waste of money. I don't agree with what they say because the language is developing and this move by the courts is only serving to promote it even more. The Maori language was made an official language of NZ in 1987. This move was lobbied by Judge Hemi Taumaunu. His/Her Honour the Judge. All rise. The District Court is now in session. These are just some phrases we'll hear from Monday on. These are also the phases the registrars will use. It's small now, but it may lead to bigger things. Anzac Pikia, Te Karere. Plans are underway to increase Maori language use With me now I have language expert, drama veteran, political commentator and golf novice Waihoroi Shortland, tena koe. We're unable to provide subtitles. Visit our website after 7pm to watch interview with subtitles. Waihoroi Shortland, thank you for your time. After the break, we speak with Elias Shadrock, daughter of Ngati Porou and member of the Magics about their game against the Vixens on Sunday. Stephen Kearney has resigned from his post as coach for the Parramatta Eels after two years with the team. The Eels are currently at the bottom of the NRL table with only three wins this year. He says the move was his decision. He also says a weight has been lifted off his shoulders and he's able to concentrate on training the Kiwis for the World Cup next near. As a Maori player for Magic, she has shone in the ANZ championship. Now Elias Shadrock of Ngati Porou has one more game to make an impression on the coaches of the Silver Ferns. Irena Smith has the details. She's in the moment. With Joeline Henry going on maternity leave this year, the question is who will replace her at wing defence. Elias Shadrock has come out strong for the Magic side this season and she credits that to some strong leadership from Noeline Taurua. She put those words into action in the game against the Thunderbirds. It's a huge change in her game considering that she was dropped from the team last year after her first year with the team. This is the team's final training before the final against the Melbourne Vixens. It will be their third time in the finals and it won't just be Waikato behind them but the whole county as they try to gain the first win for this side of the Tasman. The team leaves for Melbourne on Saturday. Irena Smith, Te Karere. Tumamao Harawira is back with us to talk sports. We're unable to provide subtitles. Visit our website after 7pm to watch interview with subtitles. Tumamao Harawira, thank you for your time. Visit our website after 7pm to watch interview with subtitles. After the break, the weather. To the weather now. For weather, see tvnz.co.NZ. Now let's take a look at the Maori Programmes TVNZ has to offer over the weekend. Tomorrow on IAMTV, we celebrate te reo in music. Ardijah, Ria Hall, Sidney Diamond and Te Ahorangi Winitana will all be in the studio. Ngai Tahu believe this kind of pounamu has been stolen from them over many years and if you have any, they want it back. Find out more on Marae Investigates this Sunday. I was born into the language of my ancestors. 'Keep going ' Yes, it's Te Aupouri dialect, but my own dialect is of Te Kao. That's all we have for today.
