  • 1Creepy Christchurch What's going on in Christchurch? Has the earthquake stirred up paranormal activity in the Garden City? Why has one family decided to move out of their home? Is it the stress of the last two years, the energy of the constantly shifting earth or is it more ghostly, spiritual? Anton Heyrick and his team of paranormal investigators are searching for the answers. But as 20/20's Emma Keeling discovers, often they're left with more questions.

  • 2Stand Your Ground A quiet, tree-lined road in Huffman, Texas, not far from Houston, is the scene of a neighbourhood falling over the edge after one man's anger over a noisy karaoke birthday party explodes into mayhem and murder. When the gun smoke clears, Kelly Danaher, a young husband, father and teacher, lies dead in the road and his neighbour from two homes down, Raul Rodriguez, is charged with murder. But Rodriquez says he was justified under the Texas version of the 'stand your ground' law.

  • 4No Shame Actress Emmy Rossum has no fear. She's currently playing a role equal to base jumping off a cliff - it takes guts. Full nudity, sex scenes, controversial story lines and not a scrap of make-up. Not every actress would be brave enough to play Fiona Gallagher in TV show Shameless. But as Emma Keeling found out, Emmy loves those sex scenes for a very surprising reason.

We will attempt to give them real honest answers, whichever way it goes. Tonight on 20/20 ` we go ghost hunting. OK, what was that? OK, what was that? Oh, the meter's going. We asked you for your paranormal stories. Cos we just want to know what is causing this. And then we sent in the experts. We will attempt to give them real honest answers, whichever way it goes. DOG BARKS, GROWLS Then an angry neighbour... Stupid idiots. Jesus, these people are stupid and they're drunk. ...goes over the edge. Stop right now or I will shoot you. So is it self-defence or murder? All you've got to say is you're in fear of your life, and you can kill that son of a bitch. And a picture is worth a thousand words ` and sometimes thousands of dollars. Kristin Stewart ` caught in the act. It's, you know, that cash register sound that goes off in your head. (CHUCKLES) Celebs caught out on camera and why we care. Captions by TVNZ Access Services. Captions were made possible with funding from NZ On Air. Copyright TVNZ Access Services 2012 Kia ora, I'm Sonya Wilson. So, what's going on in Christchurch? Has the earthquake stirred up the paranormal in the Garden City? Why has one family decided to move out of their home? Is it the stress of the last two years, the energy of the constantly shifting earth or is it more ghostly? Anton Heyrick and his team of paranormal investigators are searching for the answers. But as Emma Keeling discovered, often they're left with more questions. TRADITIONAL MAORI MUSIC MAN: Eke, eke Panuku, eke Tangaroa, ko takina te kawa. TRADITIONAL MAORI MUSIC What you're about to see, you may not want to hear. ...ko te kawa tuarua, ko takina ko te kawa tuatoru. People expect that places where pain and hurt and death has taken place... can be haunted. Few know it exists. It has claims of paranormal coming off it. Lyttelton Harbour, an island with a violent history. GUNSHOTS, EXPLOSIONS Is there something to find or is there not? Anton Heyrick and his team of paranormal investigators.... I want the full spectrum put on one of these tripods. ...plan to get to the bottom of the ghostly rumours. Do you believe in the paranormal? I would have to say that` that at times I get very close to believing that` that things have to be real. Christchurch ` a city already shaken by earthquakes. Now other things are rattling the locals. First of all, thanks for having us here. I guess to start off with... 20/20 asked for your paranormal stories, and the Stringer family got in touch. When we first moved here and the kids kept coming, 'Mum, there's something in this house, 'there's something strange going on.' I just used to poo-hoo them all the time. We asked Anton to take a look. They don't charge for their investigations. It is very difficult to get evidence that you can put forward and say, 'Hey, we believe this to be some sort of, you know, mass of paranormal activity.' The Stringers moved in 12 years ago, and things got weird for daughter Sarah. I was at home alone, and then all of a sudden I hear footsteps running up ` quite violently, as well ` like, running up the stairs. I heard them run round to my room, and then keys shaking outside my room. And I'm just, like, 'Who's that?' And then I realised my mum's not home. Aren't you taking advantage of people's fears? The underlining truth is that people are claiming these things. They believe that they are being attacked, that they are being haunted by something paranormal. Often there's no one there to really help them. Whereas they can come to us. We will attempt to give them real honest answers, whichever way it goes. If it's psychological or medical, we'll go there. If it's spiritual or unexplainable, then we're prepared to go there as well. Anton questions Sarah and mum Carol to rule out the obvious. When did it start happening? Ever been unconscious? Was there any times when you'd been drinking and it got worse? Meanwhile, team members James and Chris start testing the house. This is a moisture meter. This is a moisture meter. Did you want air temp and humidity? All the team have day jobs. I knew I needed building inspectors. I needed someone with qualifications in tech. I needed someone qualified in IT. I needed someone qualified in something like thermography and those types of things. You had a weird experience in the lounge. Can you tell us about that? There was just this misty cloud, just appeared in front of all of us. Someone said, Wow, what was that?' And it was just weird. It was just weird. It was just something that doesn't happen. (CHUCKLES) But it's upstairs amongst the doll collection where most of the spooky stuff seems to happen. And after hearing all the stories, I admit even I'm a little freaked. Our cat Simba was just staring at this doll for ages. And then we stared at the doll ourselves, and then it fully started, like, rattling in front of us. We were just, like, 'Oh my gosh, what do we do?' LAUGHS: I don't know how you stay in the house on your own. I'd be gone. What if Anton can come up with a perfectly rational explanation for this? That would be really good. That would be good, cos we just want to know what is causing this. How to explain the inexplicable? Anton's search for answers began at 13 years old. I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease lymphoma, stage five. Um, and in the beginning my chances were very very slim. I was terminal. I had a lump the size of two balls of wool sticking out of my throat that was cutting into my airway. I started seeing what was a` almost like a black wispy shadow. It was the first type of real paranormal experience that had ever happened to me. Looking back, do you think it was your mind playing tricks? I would probably say that it was more than likely literally a manifestation of everything that was going on. Um, but, you know, the possibility still stands that it was something more. What does your family think about your paranormal interests? Mum ` she's a bit more spiritual and a bit more` She's really really supportive. Dad supports it, but not really a believer, and that's good, you know, because sceptics keep us real. From an early age he loved those supernatural TV shows, and it got him thinking. CPINZ was` was founded back in 2010 because I had literally had enough of the old style of investigating for paranormal. A NZ man is savagely beaten by a phantom. After the Christchurch earthquakes, ghost-hunter shows came looking for him. Donald Fraser's shadow has been seen. Our website and, uh, my phone went wild after September and February earthquakes. Um, I think we calculated it to about a 120% increase. EERIE MUSIC But ghosts weren't to blame. CPINZ had gone in, worked with the people and said, 'Hey, rational answers. This is what's going on ` you're stressed. 'Heightened awareness of things moving, of things shaking. There's earthquakes going on.' The honest truth is we don't really come into contact with people that believe in the paranormal. Most of the people actually can't believe that they're calling us. Sometimes a rational answer can't be found. This case ` is it the spookiest house you've been in? It's getting up there, because of what took place there. What was that? This professional middle-class couple want to remain anonymous for their kids' sake. There are probably people who think you're nuts. There are probably people who think you're nuts. Yep, there probably is, and, um` but I'd just like to say, well, maybe they should come and live here. My first experience was just odd things being moved. Um, another time it was showers turning on, or we would hear creaking upstairs, footsteps. You knew the history of the house before you moved in. What were you told? That, um, there had been a mother and her daughter` two daughters that had died in the house. It stunned Christchurch ` the sudden deaths of a Korean family. And now strange things were happening to the new tenants. Well, our 10-year-old daughter saw our 5-year-old just kneeling in front of the mirror, almost` apparently, like, praying. She said to me, 'Oh, look, I've put a, um, sticker on her chest of drawers.' Because the little girl liked it. And she said, 'Oh, it's the one that I talk to the` talk in the mirror to.' EERIE MUSIC So did the kids know people had died in the house? So did the kids know people had died in the house? No, definitely not. It got worse. The family was so desperate, they called in a psychic. It got very cold, and the table was pulsating. Then the table starting moving. And we just had our fingertips on it, and I must admit it was very very scary. The psychic recorded the session. Large white orbs drift across the screen. But Anton's not convinced. DOG BARKS, GROWLS It would appear the dog reacts to whatever it is that floating across, and, yes, to me that's interesting. I find that interesting. I'd like to know more. Very disappointed ` the video is not showing everything. It could've showed the dog. Be nice if you could see the table, the feet, the legs and everybody's hands on the table. Um` So you're sceptical about this? So you're sceptical about this? I have remain sceptical about this. You know, I wasn't there. There were no controls put in place. Anton's doing his own investigation. He and his team locked themselves in overnight with cameras and audio recorders. So you came in here the night you did the big investigation. I was plonked down here, and Chris was over on the bed behind us with his, uh, camera facing down at me, and we heard what was the massive rumble noise. I heard... What was that? OK, what was that? OK, what was that? Oh, the meter's going. The noise came from the room next door, which was empty. This is the wardrobe. So over here behind me is where the voice recorder was set up. Door locked off, taped up, signature on it to make sure it can't be popped and this door here ` just when you give it a push like that, you know, you can hear it. But the noise that we heard was... (RATTLES DOOR) More like that. And that's clear as day on the recorder? And that's clear as day on the recorder? Clear as day on the recorder. RUMBLING, CLICKING It didn't make sense. It shouldn't have been happening. It was no earthquake. There were findings on our equipment that we cannot rationally explain yet. That's not to say it can't be. That was definitely something. UNKLE'S 'LONELY SOUL' Do spirits walk among us? Older cultures still believe. # God knows your lonely souls. # Anton's team have come to investigate Ripapa Island in Lyttelton Harbour where hundreds lost their lives. Kei tawhiti te kai, kei te ora o te kai, te kai ka tu kokoko, tuha! There is a presence here. What we do is follow our protocol of being most respectful. Riki Pitama Pakeke of Rapaki Runanga has performed a blessing. It's a large Maori history here. And, uh, most importantly it was a significant fortress bastion, a pa pakanga, where many battles were fought and many lives were lost. Are they friendly spirits or angry spirits? Are they friendly spirits or angry spirits? Oh, both ` both evil and good. JARRING CHORD Pain and suffering continued when Europeans came and built Fort Jervois. It's a grim old place, isn't it? Weren't these where they hung the prisoners off? Somewhere in the building, there is where they chained them. There is red stains on the walls. I would suggest that those hung clothing and guns. It was a prison. It was barracks. It was used to quarantine people coming off the ships with influenza. Um, you know, and a lot of deaths did take place on the island. So, that's the pillbox. These things apparently could be still fired, but they don't make shells that would fit it any more. I was told there were possibly rats living in them` I'm glad there isn't. I'm glad there isn't. No, there doesn't appear to be. 'This is the first of many visits.' You're going to spend the night.. Yep. Yep. ...here? Couple of nights? Yep. ...here? Couple of nights? A couple of nights, yeah. I think sometimes it's nice to go to sleep and let the equipment run, because the island could be at its best when it thinks it's on its own. I mean, who knows? This is an area where people have seen mist. So we've got moisture coming from one spot, landing there, cooling down and heating up in the morning. It's colder in the other room. So right there we're at a point where we've possibly debunked the mist coming from this corridor. Ooh, I thought that was rat for a minute. When there's nobody else around, this place is deathly quiet. It's` It's freaky. I'm a little bit shaky here. Uh, it's cold. Ugh, yeah, there's a weird feeling and these guys want to stay the night here. Well, better them than me. GENTLE MUSIC It's a strange business investigating what can't be seen. Why do you investigate the paranormal? Myself, I love helping people. Um, I` I really really do. But at the same time, I guess I get to go on that road of trying to find the answers for me and what happened to me as a child. Um, you know, i-it progressed for me from seeing shadows to full-blown attacks, paralysed in my bed. Um, very very hard to understand and very very hard to get to the bottom of. And so, I guess, you know, to seek is to be alive, um, and so I will keep seeking. And if you want to find out the result of Ripapa Island or any of Anton's other investigations, you can head to our Facebook page where we have a link up to their website. Next up on 20/20 ` a noisy party, an angry neighbour and a gun. Why don't y'all turn that garbage down? Some of us are trying to sleep. Then Kelly Danaher appears out of the darkness with some others from the party. Rogriguez pulls his gun. Don't come any closer, please. Don't come any closer, please. Don't you tell us not to come no closer. I said stop right now or I will shoot you. Stop! Get back! We will attempt to give them real honest answers, whichever way it goes. 1 Welcome back. A noisy party, an angry neighbour and some unusual gun laws has left a community in Texas seeking answers. Was it murder or self-defence? Raul Rodriguez was known to carry a gun at all times. So was he just looking for the chance to use it, and why did he film the whole thing? Huffman, Texas ` Attagirl! close to Houston, but a little bit more country, the kind of place where neighbours borrow tools and bring covered dishes when there's a death in the family. Tell me about it. Nice place? Tell me about it. Nice place? Yes. We loved Huffman. We loved living there. Mindy Danaher grew up here and returned to her family home with her husband, Kelly Danaher, a teacher, and their 3-year-old daughter, Peri. I would always describe Huffman to all my friends there as just` It was just a sweet little town. This is the Danahers' neighbourhood on Oak Knoll Drive in Huffman. That's Peter Fornols. He lives next door with his wife. Across the road, it's Terri Hackathorn and her family and her prized German shepherds. Then across from them, Donna and Raul Rodriguez. He's a former firefighter. They have a blended family of six kids. Donna Rodriguez says the community really came together when disaster struck in 2008. If we needed something or they needed something, we worked with each other. I mean, during Hurricane Ike everybody came together out there and got the tree out of our house. But two years after Ike on a Saturday in May 2010, a man-made catastrophe is about to hit the neighbourhood. That dark night began as a sunny day with cupcakes and candles ` a double birthday party for Mindy and Peri Danaher. The party was really fun. Everybody was there that we love so much. And we were just eating and opening presents and just hanging out with all of our friends and family. As it got late, there was some drinking and karaoke. And according to Raul and Donna Rodriguez, the birthday party becomes a nuisance. MAN: Why don't y'all turn that down?! My husband had called the constable's office to ask them to come and have 'em turn it down, cos it was so loud. The police come and go, but the karaoke continues past midnight. 'Hit me with your best shot.' WOMAN: # Hit me with your best shot. # Fire away. # 'Fire away.' Words that will become much more than lyrics as Rodriguez begins to boil. RODRIGUEZ: Stupid idiots. Jesus, these people are stupid and they're drunk. WOMAN: Come on, baby. How was he when the constable left him? Irritated. Very frustrated with 'em that they did not do crap to take care of the noise. Ken, my fiance, woke me up and said, 'I think there may be trouble fixing to happen. 'I just saw Raul leave his house, and he was walking down the street.' RODRIGUEZ: It's a little after midnight. That is the voice of Raul Rodriguez. Still speed-dialling the police, now he's also marching toward the Danahers' with a video camera in his hand, a handgun on his hip, and 28 rounds of ammunition. RODRIGUEZ: I wish the cops would hurry up. These people are drunk, drunk, drunk. Rodriguez encounters Mindy's dad, James Storm. Won't y'all turn that down, please? Won't y'all turn that down, please? STORM: Hey, who are you? Won't y'all turn that down, please? STORM: Hey, who are you? I live over here! Turn it down! Hey, don't go hollerin' to me! I told you and told you repeatedly to turn it down. I can't hear you. I hear screamin'. I can't hear you. I hear screamin'. Won't y'all turn that garbage down, please? We are trying to sleep. Then Kelly Danaher appears out of the darkness with some others from the party. Rodriguez pulls his gun. RODRIGUEZ: Don't come any closer. RODRIGUEZ: Don't come any closer. MAN: Don't tell us, 'Don't come no closer'! I said stop right now or I will shoot you! Stop! Get back! Back it up, pal. Back it up, pal. Get back. I'm in fear for my life. Get away from me. Relax, hey! Relax, hey! Get away from me. You pulled a gun on me? You pulled a gun on me? Uh yeah, y` I told you to stop. My life's in danger. You got weapons on you. Danaher's friend Jamie Tyler was there. Was Kelly approaching him, like, with his hands out, like he was ready to fight? No, not at all. No, not at all. Was he yelling? He was asking, 'What are you doing down here? What's the problem?' And then he threw his hands in the air and he backed up immediately. Tyler and the others call 911. (PHONE) MAN: There's a guy in the street with a gun, pointing at us. Rodriguez, still recording with his video camera, holsters his gun and also calls police. RODRIGUEZ: I've got about 15 people here, they want to kick my ass. I had to draw my weapon to stop them from coming to me. I felt my life was in danger, I drew my weapon, and then they stopped. Rodriguez says he's scared and in danger, yet he doesn't try to leave. RODRIGUEZ: They're gonna escalate this. I'm gonna have to defend myself. <BLEEP>. I'm gonna have to defend myself. I'm gonna have to defend myself. Then comes the moment everyone would regret. Kelly's friend Ricky Johnson makes a move. Laughing at him, approaching him, like, being silly or goofy to the camera. That's when the shooting begins. RODRIGUEZ: I'm not moving near these people. I'm gonna tell them to stay back. They're drunk, swearing. They're drunk, swearing. MAN LAUGHS GUNSHOT Rodriguez shoots Ricky Johnson in the stomach. Kelly and the others then rush in. Marshall Stetson is shot, and then Kelly Danaher at some point is shot also. (PHONE) WOMAN: Harris County 911. (PHONE) WOMAN: Harris County 911. There's gunshots been fired. He's shooting off his gun. There's three people down. So many people shot here. Three shots from Rodriguez, three men down. Johnson and Stetson are wounded; they will survive. But steps from the party celebrating his wife and daughter's birthdays, 36-year-old Kelly Danaher, husband, father, schoolteacher, lies bleeding to death. His friend Jamie Tyler takes Danaher's hand and hears his last words. I was just` I was holding pressure on his arm, and, uh, talking to him and holding his hand, telling him that help is on the way. (SNIFFS) And he talked back and forth to me a little bit and told me that it hurt. And he just faded away, let go. (BREATHES RAGGEDLY) I mean, I just immediately felt the absence of him. (VOICE CRACKS) Cos I needed someone to comfort me, and it would've been him. I mean, I'm just` I needed` needed him. Deputies arrest Raul Rodriguez and put him in jail. But he is confident he'll beat the charges. So is it murder or self-defence, and could the difference come down to these six words? Look, I'm` I'm in fear for my life now. I'm in fear for my life. Well, I was in fear for my life. I'm in fear for my life. He thought those buzzwords, the parroting of the statute would save him. If somebody messes with you, all you've gotta say is you're in fear of your life and you can kill that son of a bitch. CELLPHONE BEEPS Mummy needs a coffee. Thank you. Hey, where's Tina? At school. At school. BOTH READ: Ed's been cutting hair again. Yuck! Nescafe ` gets you together. we go ghost hunting. 1 Welcome back. Having shot and killed his neighbour, Raul Rodriguez presents the video he was filming at the time as evidence of self-defence. But was it in fact just a way for him to justify murder? In a quiet country town ` Huffman, Texas ` a story as old as Cain and Abel: neighbour killing neighbour. Was it justified or was it murder? It was an unjustified and unreasonable killing. At a trial in Houston in June, prosecutors argue the answer is right here, in the video Raul Rodriguez recorded the night he shot his neighbour. We see Kelly Danaher, hand on his heart, in the last minutes of his life ` the video Rodriguez thought would clear him. RODRIGUEZ: I'm not moving near these people. I'm gonna tell them to stay back. They're drunk, swearing. Who on earth in the history of the world takes a video camera to-to tape themselves when they think they're gonna murder somebody? Do you believe that Raul Rodriguez went down there that night to quiet the party or to get into a confrontation? or to get into a confrontation? To quiet the party. I have no doubt. Why'd he bring so much ammo? Well, he's the kinda guy that when he steps out of his house, he has his gun and an extra clip. That's just his mentality. His attorneys say Rodriguez was afraid of Kelly Danaher that night. He has the right to pull a weapon if he feels he is in fear of his life. This guy was not going up to Raul to shake his hand or pat him on the back. Kelly Danaher was going up to him why, in your estimation? In-In Raul's mind, he was going up there to... whip his ass. Where does that come from? He's the one who whups ass, not Danaher. There's a whole series of comments that take place before he pulls his gun. RODRIGUEZ: You need to keep it down. DANAHER: See, cos when I go in that house and I come back, don't think I won't be equal to you, baby. They say the loud laugh from Ricky Johnson... MAN LAUGHS ...signalled danger. GUNSHOT And it wasn't just the laughter, it was a cackle. And he was hell-bent on attacking Raul. It wasn't a... (LAUGHS WEAKLY) It wasn't a... (LAUGHS WEAKLY) How do you get that he was hell-bent on attacking Raul? You can hear the cackle on video and you can hear it get very loud. And what does a cackle mean? And what does a cackle mean? It's a maniacal laughter, like, 'I'm coming at you.' And he's hell-bent on attacking him and seriously beating him up. That's what would've happened. Rodriguez says the men were armed, just like he was. Were any of the people who came from the party armed? Were any of the people who came from the party armed? No. They recover any weapons from the scene other than yours? They recover any weapons from the scene other than yours? I don't know. You know the answer. You know the answer. I don't know. < The answer is no. < The answer is no. OK. I don't know. His lawyer says he may have mistaken a flashlight on Danaher's belt for a gun. They didn't find any weapon from him, and he was not known to carry a weapon. He was not having a reputation for violence. He was a PE teacher in an elementary school. I'm not` I wasn't known for violence myself. Yes, you were. You have a reputation in that neighbourhood. You don't have a criminal record. It's all talk. It's all talk. It's a lotta talk. A lotta talk. It's all talk. It's a lotta talk. A lotta talk. It's talk. Rodriguez did have a concealed handgun licence and knew all about the Texas Stand Your Ground law, which allows you to use deadly force if you are in fear for your life,... GUNSHOT ...with no obligation to retreat. RODRIGUEZ: I'm in fear for my life! And so the most damning part of the video, prosecutors say, is the sound of Rodriguez repeating that phrase like a mantra. RODRIGUEZ: Look, I'm in fear for my life now. I'm in fear for my life. I was in fear for my life. I'm in fear for my life. He thought those buzzwords, the parroting of the statute, would save him. What we have to know about this case, ladies and gentlemen, is that to this man, those words are rhetoric,... those words are rehearsed, and those words are fiction. He has instructed me before on what to say if I ever had to drop somebody to ensure that I wouldn't get in trouble, go to jail. 'Terri Hackathorn.' What would he tell you to say? What would he tell you to say? To tell the authorities that I was in fear for my life. If somebody messes with ya, all you gotta say is you're in fear of your life and you can kill that son of a bitch. He would try to convince anyone he came in contact with, 'Hey, listen, if anyone sets foot on your property, you can blow them away.' RODRIGUEZ: Look, I'm-I'm in fear for my life now. That's why I bring my weapon. I am in fear for my life. You know those are phrases that have meaning in the law, right? Now I do, yes, but I` You didn't then? You didn't then? Well, I-I did, but that's just what come outta my mouth. I was truly afraid. MAN: All rise. But the jury doesn't buy it. WOMAN: We, the jury, have found the defendant, Raul Rodriguez, guilty of murder. At the end of his trial in June, Rodriguez is found guilty of murder. MAN: You shall be confined for 40 years in accordance with the law. Daddy coloured this picture with you. Kelly Danaher's widow, Mindy, now raising their daughter on her own, tries to keep his memory alive. There's the Santa that Daddy took you to see. She says the verdict is a victory for the whole neighbourhood in Huffman. And all of the neighbours can actually have a life now that he's gone, and their children can enjoy living in that neighbourhood, like we did when we grew up. Donna Rodriguez and her children moved away from Huffman soon after the shooting. She says they didn't feel safe. Mindy and Peri Danaher are gone too. They moved to a different house in town. Mindy says she's satisfied Rodriguez got what he deserved. But she can't picture a future without her husband. EMOTIONALLY: And that hole that I'm missing in my life, I mean, no one can ever fill that. How could you replace that? He's not replaceable. (SNIFFLES) Next up on 20/20 ` celebrities caught on film, the money to be made and the price to be paid. We all thought she was in love with Rob Pattinson and that's her director, who's married with two kids. They're going to have to deal with this for the rest of their lives. His wife has reportedly met with a divorce lawyer and Stewart received death threats on Twitter ` because of a photograph. We will attempt to give them real honest answers, whichever way it goes. 1 Welcome back. Prince Harry snapped. Kristen Stewart caught in the act. A picture is not only worth a thousand words, it can be worth many thousands of dollars. Tonight 20/20 talks to the magazine editors and celebrity photographers about what drives the business of busting cheating stars. CLICK! Hollywood's darling, Kristen Stewart,... CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS ...caught in the act. It's, you know, that cash register sound, uh, that goes off in your head. (CHUCKLES) Thunderbolt through the celebo-sphere. I mean, you must have been hyperventilating. You're, like, 'Boy.' We thought she was in love with Rob Pattinson, and that's her director, who's married with two kids. They are going to have to deal with this for the rest of their lives. His wife has reportedly met with a divorce lawyer, and Stewart received death threats on Twitter because of a photograph. As a human being, you feel for these people, but for the readers, you know, they love these things. By 'these' we're talking celebrities cheating, caught in illicit PDA ` that's public displays of affection. We're talking LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian. She was sucking his fingers, and they were... (CHUCKLES) touching each other's faces and kissing, and it was very obvious that something was going on and their respective significant others probably were not aware of it. We're talking the very married Balthazar Getty groping the starlet Sienna Miller. There are many hotels that are very discrete where these affairs could take place and we would never know. We're talking Anderson Cooper's boyfriend Ben sucking face with a stranger in Central Park just a month after Anderson come out. For every one story we know about of somebody cheating, I'm sure there's 25 stories we don't know about. Uh, and that's why we're here, is to try to uncover those. There are now more paparazzi than ever ` around 300 in Los Angeles alone. Throw in the rise of the cell-phone snapper, and most celebs are more cagey than ever. Apart from Prince Harry, caught doing something so lewd our bosses made us pixelate his entire body. Whatever he's doing behind there, I'm not sure it's actually perfection. Anyway. The illicit celebrity PDA is now a rare bird. Kristen, it turns out, was very unlucky. That photographer, uh, had followed her to the gym that day ` you know, very ordinary pictures ` Then she turned around, went and met up with this guy. And at first, people didn't know who the guy was. And everyone realised it was the Snow White and the Huntsman director, Rupert Sanders, and wasn't a random guy ` we realised there was a backstory there. And also, his wife, Liberty Ross, was in the movie as well, playing Kristen Stewart's mother. US Weekly bought the shots for an undisclosed fee. How much is a photograph like that worth? Yeah, I can't say anything. (CHUCKLES) You can't say. We'll find out some other way. You can't say. We'll find out some other way. OK. (CHUCKLES) It would be north of $100,000 easily. A picture like this is worth thousands of dollars because it's worth may more than 1000 words. We love PDA. Public displays of affection are... you know, kind of make a story for us. If I just heard that Kristen Stewart was cheating on Robert Pattinson, 'Huh'. If I see it, 'OMG'. Exactly. It is complete photographic evidence, and, you know, you can hear it from sources, people are always sceptical unless they actually see a photo of, you know, this indiscretion happening in public. The camera almost never lies, but why do so many people care and care so much that K-Stew cheated on R-Patz? All these lonely souls who couldn't find their own idealised relationships were living vicariously through this couple. Now their oxygen supply is cut off. Who are they gonna live through? And then there's the schadenfreude brigade. It's like, 'Hey, look at them. They're not so perfect after all.' When there's a car crash on the side of the road, everyone slows down to look. Why are they slowing down to look? Because they're glad they're not smashed up in a car. But at the same time, we're attracted to all those lurid sexual details because it's exciting. Why is it exciting? Why is it exciting? It's exciting because it's sex. (CHUCKLES) (CHUCKLES) Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. (CHUCKLES) Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. BOTH CHUCKLE Is there a moment of talk around your office, 'Should we publish these? We know that this could destroy a marriage.' When there's no photo, it's much harder to go there with the story, especially if it's a married couple. But if there's a photo, you know, somebody's gonna pick it up, so it might as well be us first. And what of those who snap that photo, often maligned for their methods? Do you feel you don't deserve the bad reputation? Deserve or not deserve, I, uh, don't care either way. What difference does that make to, you know, our day to day, uh, operation? But it might make a difference to how you feel about yourself. What am I, on the psychiatrist couch? What am I, on the psychiatrist couch? I don't know. I mean, yeah. Let me ask you this ` who did the hurting? Kristen Stewart and the guy that was married did the hurting. Who did the hurting? The person that took the photo, or the people that broke promises? Next up on 20/20 ` Emma Keeling is back in Hollywood talking sex with the star of TV2's Shameless. Sex scenes ` most people say they're awful to do. I don't think they're awful at all. I don't think they're awful at all. Oh, really? It's like` If you're in a relationship, it's like free cheating. You get to, like, kiss somebody who's usually ` you know, hopefully ` really cute. Um, and as long as you have Tic Tacs before, it's all good. We will attempt to give them real honest answers, whichever way it goes. 1 Welcome back. Actress Emmy Rossum has no fear. She's currently playing pretty much role equal to base-jumping off a cliff. It takes guts. Full nudity, sex scenes, controversial storylines and not a scrap of make-up. Not every actress would be brave enough to play Fiona Gallagher in TV show Shameless. But as Emma Keeling found out, Emmy loves those sex scenes for a very surprising reason. Jesus, I'm raising five kids and I didn't miss last week. What's your excuse? (SIGHS) Carl! Show of hands. How many of you wanted to see me dead? (GURGLES) APPLAUSE, CHEERING No, no, no, no. SMASH! So you're saying there's nothing you wouldn't do on this show? So you're saying there's nothing you wouldn't do on this show? Sometimes you get a script, and you think, 'Oh gosh, are people going to hate this character forever for doing this?' Everything's up for discussion. I mean, I wouldn't say there's nothing I would never do, but, um, I think that, you know, there's always a personal limit. You bring your bathing suit? Me neither. To act in Shameless, Emmy Rossum must have higher personal limits than most. Is this a bit different, a little bit raunchier for American TV, would you say? Definitely edgier than anything I've done to date. So, uh, that is exciting and it's the challenge and I think, you know, we're trying to show a real family, what they're struggling with, and I think along with that reality that` you know, that then applies to everything ` it applies to, you know, sexuality and violence and alcoholism and just the day-to-day mundane comedic things that happen. Shameless is based on the British show of the same name which first aired in 2004. Jail? Why didn't you call me? Living in Chicago, the working class Gallagher family is a social workers' nightmare. Have you seen the UK version of Shameless? Have you seen the UK version of Shameless? I saw a bit of the pilot. Um, our director gave it to me as a reference for what extent the nudity would be. There's a lot of that. Actually there's a lot of everything. BOTH PANT I'm not sure if any topics are taboo. There's underage sex, homosexuality, alcoholism, drugs, a large range of criminal offences and even agoraphobia. Liam's in danger. He needs me. (GASPS, PANTS) Comedy-drama at its most raw. This is a pretty extreme family, I would've thought. It's weird, because we do think of this family as` as not your typical family, although they have the loyalty and the love and the` and the passion for their family that` that comes usually with family. Um, they are definitely a little bit more extreme to the lengths that they go to to survive. But` So it's weird a lot of people write us on Twitter or send us letters that say, 'This Frank Gallagher is just like my next-door neighbour,' or 'Frank is just like my dad,' or 'Fiona's like my sister.' And so it's interesting that the` that the family does actually ring true with` with people. Troubling but true. Let me see those. Rossum is Fiona, the 18-year-old eldest of drunken idiot Frank Gallagher, played by William H Macy. Bills from our creditors. You've been buying stuff using our names? Fiona keeps the family together. It doesn't have to be like this. Which part? The part where my mom splits or the part where my dad's a raging alcoholic narcissist? No, the part where you feel the world will stop spinning on its axis if you take a night off. I was attracted to the character. She's, um, a lot of contradictions. She's so young, but she's a mother figure to her whole family, but she's also a daughter and she has, um, you know, really brazen sexuality. And` And I thought she was, um, you know, in a strange sense, a really strong contemporary modern woman. And she also has this real vulnerability to her that` that you don't usually get with such strong characters. Fiona attempts to control her very wayward five brothers and sisters as well as keep boyfriend Steve happy ` not easy in a household without locks or personal boundaries. They live in such a small house with such thin walls that there's` you know, with kids everywhere, so there's, like` where would you in reality try to get it on? In the kitchen or in a closet or in the bathroom or in a car ` anywhere that's private. Variety is good. Variety is good. I-I suppose so. The Gallaghers think so. Rossum's not one to play it safe either. A child actor and singer, she took on the daunting role of Christine alongside Gerard Butler in Phantom. # The phantom of the opera is there # inside my mind. # In 2007 Rossum released a sweet pop album. But all little girls grow up. Fuck you. Fuck you. I love you too. Shameless is a big jump, but the 25-year-old hasn't flinched yet. Do the scripts push you? Are you out of your comfort zone often in this show? You know, as an actor, you have a very, um, malleable line that is the edge of your comfort zone. So it's` it's interesting. > If it rings true for the character, then I don't think there's a limit that's too far. At the end of season one, it looked like Fiona and Steve would no longer be sharing Tic Tacs. And to keep it interesting, there's a hot cop hanging around. So you're happy with your co-stars? Or do you get to choose`? So you're happy with your co-stars? Or do you get to choose`? My co-stars are adorable. No, unfortunately, I don't get any sort of approval, but, um, actually for season two, they did bring me an audition tape and were, like, 'Ha ha, you're going to be happy with us. Check out this guy.' So it's little bit like role reversal. Usually you think, 'The guys are sitting on the couch watching the pretty girls come in.' Not any more. I get to` I get to check out my co-stars. Season two of Shameless promises to be another jaw-dropper ` or in the Gallaghers' case, knicker-dropper.
