1It is three weeks since Fonterra's botulism contamination scare started in China. There is still no evidence that anyone has been affected by any dairy product using the tainted run of whey protein concentrate and Fonterra says there was never more than a one in millions chance that anyone would be. But despite that assurance, a major product recall, Fonterra's apology and a top-level resignation, as well as a multitude of Government inquiries, New Zealand's dairy exporters are still having trouble getting their products into China. The New Zealand Infant Formula Exporters Association says that around $40 million worth of its fifteen member group's products are currently at risk, despite the fact that none of them used any of the contaminated ingredient. Interview with their Spokesman.
2The Social Housing Reform Housing Restructuring and Tenancy Matters Amendment Bill will pave the way for what the Government calls a 'substantive shift' from the old State Housing model to a new Social Housing model. This new model sees the hundreds of millions of dollars spent each year on income-related rent subsidies for high-needs families made available to approved social housing providers beyond Housing New Zealand, such as the Salvation Army, IHC or an iwi. It will also see the Ministry for Social Development take over the task of assessing the needs of social housing tenants. Catholic social justice agency CARITAS are concerned that some needy families may be overlooked in the new structure. Interview with CARITAS' Advocacy Co-Ordinator.
