1Bastion Point: An Overview "A combined police and army operation has put down a native land protest at Bastion Point in Auckland. 600 police assisted by elements of the New Zealand Army moved in on the protesters this morning. More than 200 people, mostly native Maori, were arrested and another 100 were forced to leave. The natives have been camped on the land for 16 months in an attempt to gain it back from white dominated New Zealand Government. The land is the last area in the hands of local natives, but the Government decided to sell it off for largely white housing developments. The natives...were supported by a handful of white workers, singing traditional songs and hymns as they passively resisted the police and army invasion." Bastion Point today, as the news agencies of some other countries may depict it.
