In 1951, the National Government led by Sid Holland tried to break the Waterside Worker's Union headed by the charismatic Jock Barnes. The Tories implemented a string of hard-line measures, including the infamous Emergency Regulations, which made it a crime to offer food or assistance to a locked-out worker's family. However, the wharfies resisted the totalitarian power of the state for 151 days.
