I'm travelling the world to discover the secrets of lasting beauty,... There's snail secretion in this. ...great health... This is your pharmacy? Yeah. ...and extraordinary long life. Better skin than I've got. Look at him. From different parts of the world, I wanna find the secrets. This time I'm on a vibrant journey to inner beauty... I love you, India! Mwah! ...to find the keys to contentment. Do you think the whole 'living forever' is a bit of an ego trip? Yes, exactly. I put my body on the line... I have oil up my butt right now. ...and discover the many flavours of beauty. Luckily there are no mirrors in here. So can all this... and a guru's wisdom help me find ultimate well-being? We can make the entire world beautiful. Isn't it? This is a dream come true. I'm sitting here on the Ganges in Varanasi, one of the holiest cities in the world, and the sun's rising. RICH MUSIC Ancient philosophies from thousands of years ago still run deep here, and I'll be exploring them to work on my inner beauty. Because, like most people, I'm still searching for true happiness. Then right you bring back. I get my own sense of peace from yoga, which I started about 10 years ago, and I love it. What better place in the world could you do yoga ` right on the banks of the Ganga? Meditation is a more recent addition for me. It helps bring focus and calm. Since India's the birth place of both yoga and meditation, I reckon it's the perfect place for digging deeper into the secrets of well-being. I'm taking a trip with Devesh on the Ganges to discover the ideas that drive the philosophy here. But why the Ganges? Why? The belief in the purifying qualities of the Mother Ganga, as they call the Ganges, may have ancient roots, but I've got to say, it's a challenging idea from where I'm sitting. Yeah. Just as well I'm wearing this, then. Yes. BOTH LAUGH You know, the big thing here is people walk with a sense of well-being and spirituality and also sense of peace. So if I wanted to improve my meditations and stuff, what` what would you suggest that I do here? And the right choices, because your mind's more calm. Exactly. It's more calm. It's wonderful to hear Devesh support my views and beliefs on meditation. Yeah, it is. > It's an exchange of energy is there. That's amazing. I love that spirituality here is as much a part of daily life as smiling and even bathing. But then again, rituals do seem to run almost 24-7. This one is giving thanks to the Mother Ganga. I never thought I'd be standing in Ganga right now. (LAUGHS) There's a few squishy parts, though, that I'm feeling a little, uh... It's pretty amazing. The candle's still lit. It's still lit. There's hope for me yet. (CHUCKLES) At sunset I get to experience the ceremony of thanks on a much grander scale. The five physical elements of fire, water, earth, air and space are offered, with the aim of removing darkness and purifying the mind. It's a lot to take in. I reckon I'm going to need some guidance. Just as well India is packed with gurus. The next day, I'm back down to earth. I'm getting in amongst daily life to find out more about this colourful and chaotic country. It's amazing. There's so many cows that are just free, running around here, and they just hang out. You won't find cow meat on the menu here, as they are considered a mother to the people because of their milk, and dung used as fertiliser and fuel. I might be starting my trip in this holy city, but I'm discovering Varanasi's a place where many people come to die. All this chaos with the motorbikes and the cows and the dogs. There's these people with their loved ones, um, making their way towards the Ganges. It's extraordinary. Don't even know how to feel. I'm kind of a little bit numb right now. For millions of Hindus worldwide, the Ganges is a spiritual gateway, and it's got me super curious about how easily they seem to accept death here. I'm on my way to a hotel where the elderly and the terminally ill from all over India come to check in, to die near the Ganges. Professor Shastri moved from Southern India nine years ago, specifically to die in Varanasi. He says their matter-of-fact approach to death is due to their belief that God is within us, and dying in Varanasi is a reincarnation fast track to salvation. Yeah. So death just does not scare you whatsoever? Scary? No, no, no. Do you think that, you know, the whole 'living forever' is a bit of an ego trip? Like, 'I'm so great, I don't want to die.' Yeah. Everything so far is pointing to keeping life simple and the mind calm, so why am I finding this so emotional? I know. I don't like crying. > I know, but I don't like crying. BOTH LAUGH Thank you. Um, there's many things that you've said that will live in my life. Namaste. Namaste. Namaste. Thank you. So what other colourful, life-changing experiences lie ahead,... Am I yellow? (LAUGHS) ...as my search for inner beauty takes me into uncharted territory? Who does an enema on TV? I am the master of the way. I am the master of the way. ALL CHATTER, LAUGH Hey! Over here, mate. (LAUGHS) Hey! Over here, mate. (LAUGHS) Thank you so much. See ya! Hey, thanks for driving tonight. Hey, thanks for driving tonight. You owe me. Hey, thanks for driving tonight. You owe me. (LAUGHS) Fair enough. Kate was giving me the eye as well. What?! What?! She was. No. No. BOTH LAUGH What's that? What's that? Oh crap. Don't worry about it. You're well under. Don't worry about it. You're well under. Yeah, but it's a lower limit now. Good evening. Any alcohol tonight? Good evening. Any alcohol tonight? Uh, just a couple... with dinner. Good evening. Any alcohol tonight? Uh, just a couple... with dinner. Yeah. She's fine, eh. Stop. That's over 250 micrograms. I now require you to accompany me to the booze bus... Oh stink. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you do say... It's a failed result, ma'am. ...may be given in evidence in court. You could ring a taxi and pick your car up in the morning. Let's call your mum and dad. They're, like, 10 minutes away. Let's call your mum and dad. They're, like, 10 minutes away. We're not calling my parents. CHILDREN ARGUE CHILDREN ARGUE Please. Behave yourselves. No. In the car. INDISTINCT RT CHATTER s BOLLYWOOD MUSIC This is crazy, but this is a daily thing. But I love you, India! Mwah! It might seem ironic that I'm in India to find inner harmony, but this is the land of gurus. So I'm heading to the southern state of Tamil Nadu to find one, and I'm also exploring the part health plays in well-being here. It excites me, this. This really excites me. I'm getting my hands dirty in the field of natural remedies. On her farm, Ramya uses a traditional curry spice for things you never imagined. Now I'm about to go and see where the turmeric is grown here in South India. It is one of the most important plants in India. This is the turmeric plant. Yeah. We use turmeric in everything. I don't think I remember a day that I've not used turmeric. Really? Yes. Turmeric has its place in spirituality here too. It's associated with purity and fertility so appears in rituals like marriage ceremonies. You wouldn't expect such an extravagant and beautiful piece of nature's medicine lives under this plant. Pretty cool. Ramya's passion for all things herbal started by using turmeric to heal an ongoing abscess. She now runs a blog that identifies herbs and shares age-old recipes. One of those local recipes is about to help me revitalise my skin, and the main ingredient? You guessed it ` that wonder spice, turmeric. I'll never look at a curry the same again. For the face pack, I've already, uh, soaked the turmeric. So it's gone from very yellow to a very orangey baby-poo colour. (LAUGHS) I could turn a little bit yellow. You have to try some of these things that are just so ancient. Ramya's adding some holy basil as antiseptic for any pimples. So how long do you leave something like this on? Till it dries up completely. (LAUGHS) Totally normal. My face is kind of a little bit heated up from the basil, but I'm sure that's what brings all the, kind of, colour and vibrance to your skin, um, once this comes off. Just 10 minutes later, I'm highly suspicious that curry spice has turned me into a tandoori marinade. (LAUGHS) Am I yellow? Am I yellow? Yeah, you are. (LAUGHS) Really? Yeah. Like, bright? Not bright. > My skin feels great. OK, let me have a look. Oh my God. (LAUGHS) I'm yellow. I look jaundiced. How long will this last? No, you just have to wash your face with my face wash, and it will just go. You're even laughing at me right now. No. I mean, that is the beauty from all over the world. Everybody does something different, and we should never be afraid to try stuff. This will wash off with soap, but also, you know, um` I hope it washes off with soap. My skin is amazing, but I come from another planet. Turning yellow is not for every intrepid beauty, but heading further south to the state of Kerala is about to take me even deeper into one of the world's oldest forms of holistic medicine. And, hey, what's the worst thing that can happen? When I was young, my mother was very much into natural remedies, which she knew somewhat about the Ayurvedic medicine, which is 5000 years old. I'm about to go to a hospital where that's all they do. Ayurveda was written about in the same philosophical texts as meditation and yoga. Like they say here, everything is connected. Today it's a popular alternative medicine worldwide, with millions swearing by its benefits. What other treatments do people come in for? Ayurvedic practitioners, like chief physician Dr Mooss, believe there are three different biological energies, called doshas, that make up our individual constitution. OK, I would love to know my dosha. To find out which of the three doshas is most dominant in me, Dr Mooss first has to wade through my very long list of issues. I had a surgery on my back. I also had inflammation in my heart. I have an 8mm herniation in my neck. I actually have pins and needles in my hands and up my arms. I lose function in my hands. Mm. Well, I haven't scared him off. In fact, he's using that info, taking my pulse and clocking my personality to find my dosha and determine my treatment. Pitta dosha? Pitta dosha. Can you do`? (LAUGHS) Why do you laugh? I can't believe it. Pitta people are said to be very wilful and fiery, and I thought I was so chilled. Are they excited people? OK, 'excited' I can live with. And Dr Mooss' treatments include addressing a digestive one too ` just quietly, constipation. It's a very different way to attack issues and medical problems, and I think there's nothing better than to go and do the treatments that I'm about to do, which are kind of unknown, which include lots of oil and an enema. Who does an enema on TV? What`? Can you clarify what an enema is here? So I'm doing it on this table? Yeah. Looks like a gynaecologist's office. So we'll start with a massage, ah? So this treatment will be done in a periodic way, in seven different positions. The medicated oil works in combination with herbal packages to penetrate the skin and ease my back and neck pain. Feels very very nurturing. I feel all sleepy. It's made me all sleepy. OK. > It may look like a Danish, but this roll of flour and water is used for containing the warm oil on my lower back. Feels like it just strips away all of the tension, basically. Now, there's no avoiding the next treatment. Oh my God. Combining oil and honey is nothing new when it comes to making muesli, but this particular mixture is going where the sun don't shine. I'm having anxiety. (GROANS) (LAUGHS) Oh my God, so I've got to keep it in? Yeah. I have oil up my butt right now. While the enema gets to work on clearing out my digestive system, I'm giving in to the bewildering treatments. I have no idea what's happening. Like, why am I growing horns? What's going on? The oil will be poured into your hat. Oil is going to be poured on my head? Doing a complete detox often involves weeks of individualised therapies, but I'm finding even this taster treatment for my neck and back pain quite an eye-opener. Luckily there are no mirrors in here. I'm going to pour the oil to your head. Finally there's bandages with medicated paste for my legs, to help the circulation and joints. Now we're just waiting for my enema to come out. Still hasn't, and it's been 30 minutes. I guess I have to go to the toilet. Don't force it. So I've been waiting here for about 45 minutes, and everybody's left, and I'm still waiting for my enema to work. They're turning out the lights and going home. (LAUGHS) Everybody's... left, and I still haven't... taken a poo. I'm going to go try. I didn't have a full treatment, but my digestion definitely got the kick it needed. Next, my search for well-being zeroes in on a guru. If you pay attention, you will see every joyful face is a beautiful face. s SITAR MUSIC On my tour of beauty in India, I'm searching for the secrets to inner beauty, and a guru to light the way. It's a kind of alternate well-being, so, of course, good health is crucial too, and there's a little-known rice grown here in Kerala that is the very definition of a superfood. Hello. Wow, look at the colour. It's so different. I feel very lucky to be able to have some of this rice. Thank you. Once on the verge of extinction, Navara rice is not only full of amino acids and proteins but can boost your immunity, digestion and circulation. In Australia I was told to eat more spices in my diet, and, boy, have I come to the right place. Is it spicy? It's light. Mmm. It kind of floats around in your mouth and then somehow gets down your throat. It's very easy. It's no wonder it's called the well-being rice. (LAUGHS) This is so delicious, and the spices are perfect. It's amazing. Thank you. I'm also told making it into a face pack oxidises the skin, and as a powder it can be used on snakebites. No wonder it's four times the price. Whoever said they had felt well-being when they were eating? Nourishment comes on so many levels here, and all of my Indian adventures have led me to this point. I'm about to experience the Isha Yoga Center in Coimbatore and meet a world-leading guru. CHANTING BELL CHIMES The connection to energy and well-being is everywhere in this place. Sadhguru is one of India's 50 most influential people. He consults for international organisations like the UN and inspires millions worldwide. I've been practising yoga for years, so I'm very excited to meet him and discuss his programmes to heighten self-awareness through yoga. The profoundness of yoga ` it's not an exercise; it's not a fitness regimen. It can change the entire` your very way of existence. This is the reason why here yoga is not taught as it is taught in the studios in the West. This is hidden life transmission happening. Without creating the necessary commitment and focus, it cannot be transmitted. Yeah. There's an entire science behind this. Right now, your perception is limited to five sense organs of seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and touching. Or, in other words, you can only perceive that which is physical. Yeah. Yoga is about that ` to transcend the limitations of five senses so that you begin to taste another dimension. This is the message to the world ` that yoga is a tool for transformation. I know my yoga practice isn't up to this standard, but Sadhguru has given me a greater understanding of how yoga and meditation can give me a universal connection, awareness and ultimate well-being. How do we get this so wrong? Human beings have lost perspective as to who they are. Today everything is going fine in the existence, you know? All the planets in the solar system never crash into each other. Everything is perfect. But one nasty little thought in your mind, and it's a bad day. That's because, uh,... most human beings, they're just a psychological drama. Yep, I'm as guilty as anyone for getting caught up in life's small stuff. If you understand that you are mortal, you have no time to quarrel with somebody. You have no time to do anything that doesn't truly mean something to you in your life. What is the only ` and only ` reason why someone can be unhappy or miserable? Because life is not happening the way they think it should happen. Isn't it? Isn't it? BOTH LAUGH There is no other reason for human misery. So if happiness is about letting go of expectation, I'm wondering what role beauty has to play in well-being. Most people think beauty means Botox. No. Whatever is the shape of your nose, whatever is the shape of your face, however it is, if you pay attention, you will see every joyful face is a beautiful face anyway. This means we can make the entire world beautiful. I love that. What a gorgeous way to see the world. The simplicity of what he says is just profound, and now I'm using it to try and tap into that universal awareness. It's just the intensity, the energy here is just amazing. I don't know why it makes you feel emotional, but it does. To immerse myself, first there's a dip in the cleansing pools that contain natural minerals to balance and energise. And now I'm ready for the meditation space that people travel thousands of miles to experience. It's not about any particular religion; it's just an incredible chance to retreat from the world, switch off and clear my mind. It felt amazing. Be focused on the breath. My time here has left me feeling chilled, connected and elated, on a completely new level. I came to India to find the secrets of inner beauty, and, boy, this place is rich with them. Spirituality is everywhere and in everything, from the water to the cows, to the herbs
