I'm Rachel Hunter, and this time I'm on a journey through the Americas to discover more secrets to health, well-being and long-lasting beauty. Natural make-up. That is so crazy great! Beautiful. Oh my God. That's somebody's face. (CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS) This time I'm in Houston, Texas to join the backlash against fast food... This is your entire daily allowance of calories. I'm going to hell. ...and discover the new food revolution,... If you wanna feel alive, why would you eat something that's dead? ...learn about beauty and health in space... We're going to the Moon. ...and try out a new fitness regime that could have me climbing the walls. That's pretty crazy. (GRUNTS) (LAUGHS) Copyright Able 2017 (ROCK MUSIC) I'm about to do what 50 million Americans do every day ` eat some fast food. And I'm as guilty as anyone. Every now and then you want, you know, fast food ` fried chicken or burgers and fries. Just every now and then. Hi. Can I take your order? Hi. Could I get a Double-Double? You wanna upsize? Oh, yeah, two. Sorry, two. You want bacon too? One with bacon, please. What else can I stick on it? Do you have pickles? Extra cheese? And cheese, yeah. Aioli, onion rings? Oh, yeah, that. All of that, yeah. And could I have extra fries with that too? Do you wanna supersize your fries? Yeah. OK, thank you. That's two upsized Double-Doubles with extra cheese, bacon, pickles and onion rings, with supersized fries and two chocolate shakes. I think that should do me for now. OK. Drive down to the next window. Hello. You're amazing. Thank you, darling. Driving around Houston, it seems there are fast food places on every corner. No coincidence, then, that five years ago Houston was named and shamed as the fattest city in America. Faith Foreman, like me, enjoys the odd burger and fries, but it's not often she eats them these days. So, we got the Double-Double. OK, I don't know if I can eat the Double-Double. She's part of the Go Healthy Houston task force, formed to get their city off that fat list. How big of a problem is... obesity in Houston? Well, we were on a bad list of being one of the fattest cities around 2011, and so I think that was a wakeup call, and so we started our efforts to make Houston really a healthier place. Now fast forward to where we are today ` we're not on that top 10 list any more, so we're making improvements. So, something like our big project we call Sunday Streets ` when we actually close a city street down for about a mile or 2 miles, and we open that to what we call active transportation, which is walking, biking, running, skating, dancing, whatever you wanna do. Everyone should have the access and the right to have healthy food and opportunities to get physically active. That's really what Go Healthy Houston is all about. Who doesn't love a burger and fries? It is a Texas favourite. How many calories is this? I'm gonna guess well over a thousand calories. Usually I have Sundays as free range day, like you can just eat whatever you want. I knew we were soul sisters, because Sunday is my day too. If I want dessert, then Sunday is that day. Oh, my God, that's really good. Yes. I think you added bacon. This is your entire daily allowance of calories, probably, for the average-sized woman. You can't eat anything else the rest of the day. It's actually really quite good. (CHUCKLES) See, this is the thing ` once you get into it, it's gonna be hard to put down. I have never done crack in my life, but this is probably the closest thing to it. (LAUGHS) I'm kidding, of course. But it's no joke that for some people, eating junk foods high in salt, sugar and flavour enhancers can lead to a full-blown addiction. It tastes so good while you're eating it, but it feels horrible afterwards. It's disgusting and gross, and I'd prefer to go back and have a nap in my hotel room. But I'm doing something completely opposite. Samir Becic is a personal trainer who's been helping to get Houston off that fat list, and he clearly likes to make an entrance. Hello. Hi. How are you? I'm fine. Good to see you. Good to see you too. Rachel. Yes. This is quite the motorcade. Do you do that all the time? No. Only for special people. (LAUGHS) As soon as you're ready. OK. Let's go. I'm not quite sure what I've got myself into, but apparently, Samir's philosophy is that your body is the only gym you need. His brand of exercise is all about how to improvise with whatever you have around you. Just go easy. Go for a walk. And suddenly you feel so good, Rachel, that after six months, you suddenly start doing this. Whoo! And you can start doing this. Whoo. (CHUCKLES) I hope he's not expecting me to do that. Whee! I'm still walking. (LAUGHS) So, what would you do after that? So,... OK. Oh my God. What is he doing now? (GROWLS, GRUNTS) Yeah, no. Is that legal? (GRUNTS) That's pretty crazy. Haven't seen crazy yet. (GRUNTS, PANTS) I don't know about that. What could I do at home if I didn't have any of this equipment? One, put one leg forward. Samir has helped thousands of locals by developing a way of working out that everyone can do in their own homes and for free. Like that. Focus on pushing against the wall the entire time. Every single muscle in your body. Tight your abs. Tight your quadriceps, hamstrings. Pretty much think about it ` you have to move this wall. Next step is, move your body half an inch back and forth, 1 inch back and forth. Everything you have. You can do this. Tight your abs. Now, even though you're going back, you're still trying to move the wall. Try to move the wall in and away back. Try to move the wall. Push straight. Now how do you feel? I feel good! Like, I mean, it does get rid of that aggression. These exercises are so simple, they're actually genius. I'm barely moving, but take my word for it ` my muscles are getting a serious workout. Last five, four, three, two, one. And relax. Good job. Those exercises, they are just easy exercises that you can do in the office if you've got a 15-minute break or whatever. But Samir isn't quite finished with me yet. For this workout, apparently, I only need my hotel hallway. You can do this. (GRUNTS) (EPIC MUSIC) So, Rachel. You wanna do same thing? I think I'll pass on that one. (GRUNTS) In fact, I think we should probably add a don't-try-this-at-home disclaimer. (EPIC MUSIC) That's amazing. What makes that exercise so special? You use every single muscle in your body. That's amazing. Ready? What are we doing now? One more exercise. Try to push me. Try to push me. What? Bend your elbow slightly, use your muscle, and try to push me. Yes. Keep going. Bend your elbow. Look straight. Tight your abs. Tight your abs. Look straight. I'm gonna stop you if you don't bend your elbows. I'm gonna push him out the door! Bend your elbows, like this. (LAUGHS) OK, so that doesn't quite cancel out the lunch, but I definitely feel less bloated and re-energised after being with Samir. So there's no excuses when I'm on the road. I mean, who knew all I needed was a wall to work out? Coming up ` from diabetic to diet guru. I've seen people get over cancer, Crohn's disease, heart disease. And health and well-being in outer space. Welcome to Mars. 1 I'm in Houston, Texas, the fast-food capital of the world. But today I'm meeting up with someone who has come up with a quick and easy way for the city folk here to get fresh fruit and organic vegetables. And her name is FullyRaw Kristina. How are you? Hello. It's so amazing to meet you. It is so wonderful to meet you as well. How does the co-op work? I mean, we're in this incredible place here. Do you want me to show you? Yeah. Our beautiful, beautiful hub of produce? Come this way. OK. Perfect. Kristina started the co-op when she was 20 years old, with just 12 members. Today her non-profit company feeds thousands of families and has grown to be the biggest organic, raw co-op in the United States. So, everything's picked literally this morning, so it lasts a lot longer. And these boxes change every...? Week. Every week. Every week I order something different. Hello. How are you today? The co-op works by sourcing and curating organic produce into boxes ranging from $25 to $90. We eat, you know, much, much more fruits and vegetables than I've ever eaten. I mean, I don't remember the last time I had a steak. Do you feel different not eating meat? Yeah. I'm a lot lighter. I'm the lightest I've ever been except in the military, when basic training. Kristina is a picture of health. Her hair, her skin, her eyes ` she's just gorgeous. So I'm quite shocked what motivated her to go raw. I grew up eating the most unhealthy diet you could possibly ever imagine. I never ate fruits and vegetables, and when I was 16, I was diagnosed with type II diabetes ` hypoglycaemia. And I naturally reversed my diabetes by going raw vegan. So, why is eating raw so much better for your body? If you wanna feel alive, why would you eat something that's dead? It's living food. I've seen people drop 200 pounds. I've seen people get over cancer, Crohn's disease, heart disease, acne ` little things to huge things. Wow. All right. Can I carry that for you? No, honey. This is what I do. It's no breaking news that fresh fruit and vegetables lead to good health, but if anyone could actually get me to quit burgers, I think it would be Kristina. She's amazing, very inspiring, very loving, and just has an all-round incredible message. (ELECTRONIC MUSIC) From First World issues, like obesity, to something a bit more out of this world. Now, I couldn't come to Houston without going to NASA. I mean, how cool would it be to be able to go to outer space at some point in my lifetime? But what I really wanna know is how do you maintain your health and beauty and well-being in outer space? It's pretty exciting to be here, gotta say. Someone who will be finding out first-hand is astronaut Jeanette Epps, who's one of the lucky few to be heading to the International Space Station in 2018. How did you feel when you got the letter saying that you were accepted? Well, it's overwhelming ` I'll say that. It's overwhelming. There were 18,000 applications. So May 2018, I'm scheduled to go to the International Space Station and will live there for six months. So exciting for you! Thank you so much. It's so amazing. We will do some amazing experiments to try to figure out, how do we get human bodies to live longer in space and how do we maintain peak physical fitness as well? It's gonna be an amazing experience. Can we go see your new home for 2018? Definitely. Definitely. OK. Cool. That would be awesome. So, this is basically what the International Space Station looks like, kind of, made up for you guys? Yes. Oh, my God, plants! This is what I wanted to know. So you are growing plants up there. There are. We grew lettuce. We've grown a few things up there, and they grew pretty well. And one of the crews, they did get a chance to eat the lettuce that they grew, so it was pretty nice. FullyRaw Kristina would be pleased. And this is the Node 3. This is where the bathroom, the WHC, is located and all of our exercise equipment as well. The treadmill's there. Right. And so, yeah, you run in that position because in space, it doesn't matter. Oh my God. It doesn't matter. No, it doesn't matter. Muscle and bone mass declines rapidly in space, so to combat this, all astronauts on the ISS have to spend a minimum of two hours of every day exercising. So they're basically training like elite athletes just to stop themselves from wasting away. Your bone density will decrease if you don't exercise. Right. And so, overall health` And the muscles. Yeah. Circulation, everything depends on working out. Right. Your immune system ` everything's impacted in a good way by it. And guess what? It's bad news for skin too. Space travel dries it out and accelerates ageing. As for hair ` I think every day would be a bad hair day for me without gravity or anywhere to wash it. But you don't shower? You do sort of a sponge bath kind of thing, yes. Hmm. Space travel is definitely moving down my bucket list. But what about beauty sleep? Here's where we'll sleep. It's not exactly five-star accommodation, but apparently they still manage to get their eight hours. Oh my God. It's very quiet, isn't it? Yeah. Someone can sleep here, someone sleeps there, someone sleeps there ` up, down, left, right. It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter in space, no. OK, so, I'm getting the idea that space travel is not a trip to the spa. Do they let you have a sleepover and test it out? (LAUGHS) Not in this one. I have not had the chance to test it out. But most importantly for me is, apart from a bit of hydroponic lettuce, what would I eat in space? Grace Douglas is one of NASA's food scientists. Down here we're trying to lose weight, and you're trying to maintain their weight up there. It's more important in space flight to eat calories consistently every day, because if you lose any weight, some of it could be muscle and bone mass. So we want them to keep eating, so we want the food to be high quality. One of the biggest things is the food has to be shelf-stable for two to three years. (GIGGLES) Are those shrimps? Yes, they are. This is freeze-dried shrimp with cocktail sauce. No way. And that's actually a favourite of a lot of crew members. So we can try some of these foods. Turkish fish stew. So, this uses a barramundi. Oh, my God, you guys, that's amazing. Like, the olives, everything ` the taste is incredible. Oh my God. The creamed spinach is amazing. Butternut squash. That's really amazing too. Are they ever allowed a beer or a glass or wine? No. (CHUCKLES) No. (LAUGHS) No, we don't send any alcohol. No, no alcohol. No. OK, so no cocktails in space either. But the food is actually pretty amazing. It's hard to believe it all comes out of packets with shelf lives of two to three years. You're welcome. That's amazing. Thank you. But before I go, I'm getting a treat much more exciting than a freeze-dried packet. We're going to the Moon. This space rover is the prototype for a future Mars landing. Oh my God. Can we go down there? And it's so much fun to drive. Maybe I'll reconsider space travel after all. Welcome to Mars. (LAUGHS) Coming up ` I go country glam. Oh my God! Gonna add clip-in extensions in. And can I be healthy and eat a burger at the same time? You understand you're in Houston, Texas? No, I know. 1 My tour of beauty has brought me to Texas, and if there is one state in America that has an iconic fashion style, it's here. But they're not stuck in a style time warp ` they just find ways to reinvent the style they love. Hey! Welcome to Texas. And today I'm meeting local model Nina Shaw to get a Texan makeover for this decade. OK. Show us what you've got. Let me show you some Texas swag. OK. OK. I love the spin. We love jeans down here. Yup. These are super-cute. OK. Let's hope I can fit into those. So I think we should do, like, a T-shirt and a blazer and some... (WHISPERS) Can I say that word? What? I was gonna say 'badass boots'. Go ahead. I've said worse. Oh, OK. Good. We're gonna do some badass boots. These ones? Yeah. Oh my God. They're blue underneath. (GIGGLES) So cool. I thought this would be so cute for you. READS: I will destroy your heart. Yeah! And then a blazer. This is called the passive-aggressive T-shirt. (GIGGLES) You like this? Yup. Yup. Gorgeous. Let's go to the dressing room. So, what do you think? Awesome. So, what else is typical, like, mainstream Texas? We do a little bit of big hair, cos we have saying, 'The bigger the hair, the closer to God.' Well, in Texas we like big hair. Yup. But instead of, like, the Californian style, which is kinda beachy and flat, we can take beachy and take it big. Because everything's bigger in Texas. Yes! The bigger the hair, the closer to God. Yeah. Yes. What do you think people's image of Texas is as far as fashion and style? Dirtied-up Wranglers and some cowboy boots. WHISPERS: Don't be stupid. (LAUGHS) (SNIGGERS, LAUGHS) Which we don't! I mean, there's some people that do, but we still class it up and make it look cool and chic. Like country glam. Yeah, country glam. (COUNTRY ROCK MUSIC) So, Rachel, to give you that big Texas hair, we're gonna add some clip-in extensions in. Look at it. It looks perfect. Gorgeous! Perfect. So beautiful. Good teamwork. Yeah! If the bigger the hair, the closer to God, then I'm practically at the Pearly Gates right now. Oh my gosh! I'm fully Texas now. You're a Texan, but I have a gift to give you. You're so sweet! Bam. Oh my God. No way. Oh my God. That's just the icing on the cake. It might not be able to fit my big hair. Oh my God, it does! It fits. (LAUGHS) Texas swag from head to toe. Then you can go boot scootin'. Boot scooting? What's that? Boot scootin'. That would be line dancing. Big hair, big hat, big boots and big butt. (LAUGHS) Yes! My time in Texas has nearly come to an end, but I feel like there's a bit of unfinished business. Today I'm giving up glam and going greasy and roadside. I started my tour of beauty with a burger, and now I'm gonna end with one. Craft Burgers is one of Houston's most popular food trucks. Hello, Shannen. So nice to meet you. Nice to meet you as well. So, you make all these incredible array of burgers? Absolutely. Gourmet, all-natural burgers. But he doesn't offer a vegan option, and he's sceptical his customers would order one if he did. OK, so, I've given myself this challenge to try and make ` brace yourself ` a vegan burger just as popular as a regular burger. Well, good luck with that. (BOTH LAUGH) You understand you're in Houston, Texas? No, I know. There's cows everywhere. This is the patty mix. (LAUGHS) It looks like a rice pilaf. (TITTERS) Speechless. I think that's a nervous laugh. Isn't the smell amazing? He's worried my burgers might actually outsell his. Toasted rice. Can I take your order? The buttermilk fried chicken with... Hey, guys, would you ever order a vegan burger? I don't know about vegan. (LAUGHS) Fine. Don't rub it in. OK, this might be harder than I thought. I'm not, I'm not laughing. Anybody wanna try a vegan burger? Anybody? No pressure. It's free. (LAUGHS) OK, this is not going well. I think I need to up my marketing plan. So this is how I would want my burger. Now, doesn't that look appetising? Hmm, Shannon's burgers smell really good. Disclaimer ` for anyone who eats this burger, I did not make this. The Tour of Beauty Vegan Burger. OK, so I've made my burger. Now I just need to find some people brave enough to actually try it. Do you guys wanna try a vegetarian burger? Anybody? No pressure. No. No? He's got some diehard fans. Do you wanna take a bite of it? Argh! It's good. It's good, right? That's my first time ever trying one. It's really good. It's good, right? It's a good option. How we doing, ladies? Hi. Can I have a vegan burger? You absolutely can. Yes! My first order. This is really good. OK. Now I'm in business. Amazing. Really?! Really good, yeah. The best vegan burger I have tasted. To be fair, it's probably the only vegan burger she's ever tasted. But I'll take that as a win. Yeah, I wanna taste it. And now to convert Shannen. This is the bomb. Yeah. I mean, I am shocked. This is really good. Yeah. I could come down and work for you and, like, make a couple of vegan burgers a day. (LAUGHS) So I think I've proven you can have a burger in Houston and still be healthy. (COUNTRY MUSIC) Houston has been absolutely... surprising. This city weighed in the fattest city in America five years ago. But because of some visionary people that are making huge changes, I think there's incredible awareness of well-being starting to happen in Texas. The people have got big hearts, the hair's big, the fashion's big ` like, you literally fall in love with that culture here. You know, you can't help but feel the essence of this big, warm heart of Texas. Howdy, everyone. My album's coming out next week. I mean, this is just too like my character. I shouldn't be allowed Texas. I love Texas! I think I could come and live here. Got my boots and my hair did. (LAUGHS)
