  • 2New Zealand's first modern opera is the Maori opera Waituhi – The Life of the Village, which is a village near Gisborne. The music is by Ross Harris and Witi Ihimaera wrote the libretto. It is based on his novel Whanau and is the story of the writer’s life in this village. The opera opens at the State Opera House in Wellington tomorrow night.
