1The McKenzie Country in the South Island has hosted around 150 visiting photographers as part of a conference "Focus on New Zealand". They also attended workshops and had mentoring from some of the world's top photographers. They have begun setting up a New Zealand centre for Photography.
2Tourists are getting to see New Zealand art but often the locals don't get information on what is happening in the art scene. The Kaleidoscope team are touring the country from Bluff to Kaitaia, avoiding the main cities to profile artists in their own regions. Shona McFarland continues her road trip in Northland. In Albany Elaine Power is a natural history artist and illustrator. In Waiwera potter Robyn Stewart makes her pots by coil or slab, burnishing them at the leather-hard stage. Script writer and author Peter Hill and his wife actress Helena Ross now live at Kaipara Flats after careers in the UK. Peter writes scripts for film and television in New Zealand. In Paparoa, pioneer glass blower Keith Mahy has set up a studio. Whangarei harpist Kim Webby is self taught and builds harps as well. Painter, Tom Burnett is also self taught, with both his parents being painters. Ninety one year old Ross Mitchie's Garden of Pots shows pots made from cast concrete and decorated with paint and shells. The Far North Gallery in Kaitaia shows a collect of Northland art, including weaving with reeds.
